You Don't Get Density From a Compound. You Get It From Years.
The most common question I get from men my age is which thing to take. It is the wrong question, and answering it before the real one is how people get hurt.
- Density — the thickness of tendon, joint and connective tissue that lets you carry load — is built by years of work. Nothing accelerates it into existence.
- Chemistry can raise what your muscle is capable of faster than your connective tissue adapts. That gap is where injuries live.
- The men who get hurt are rarely the ones who took too much. They are the ones who took enough to move weight their joints had not earned.
- Do the work first. Then multiply it.

I have been in gyms for fifty years, and I have watched the same accident happen to a great many men. It almost never looks like the accident people expect.
The expectation is that somebody takes too much of something and their health collapses. That does happen, and it is worth taking seriously. But the injury I have actually watched, over and over, is duller and far more common: a man raises what his muscle can do, keeps loading, and his tendons do not keep up. Something tears. Usually a shoulder, sometimes a pec, occasionally a back that never quite comes right.
He did not take too much. He took enough to move weight his joints had not earned.
What density actually is
Old lifters use the word density and rarely define it. What we mean is the thickness of the whole supporting structure — tendon, ligament, joint capsule, the connective tissue running through the muscle, and the bone underneath it. It is what lets a frame carry load without coming apart.
It is built slowly. Not because anybody decided that, but because connective tissue has a poor blood supply and remodels at its own pace regardless of your intentions. Muscle responds quickly to a stimulus. Tendon does not. That mismatch exists in a natural lifter too — it is why sensible coaches have always run beginners light for longer than the beginner wants.
Muscle adapts in weeks. Connective tissue adapts in years. Everything that goes wrong lives in that gap.
Chemistry widens the gap. It moves the muscle side faster while the tissue side carries on at its own speed. That is not an argument against it. It is an argument for knowing which side of the gap you are standing on.
Forty-five years before I touched anything
I want to be precise about my own case, because it is the whole reason I am able to write this.
I trained for roughly forty-five years before I took anything at all. Powerlifting, then Olympic lifting, then a long stretch of martial arts and the conditioning that goes with it. Twenty-five years of that overlapped with soldiering. By the time I came across any of this I was in my late sixties and carrying a frame that half a century had built.
So when I say my game improved, understand what improved. The chemistry did not build my structure. My structure was already there, and it had been there for decades. What changed was how much of it I could actually use, and how quickly I recovered enough to use it again.
Give the same thing to a man with two years of training and you have not given him what I got. You have given him a faster route to the gap.
The one that nearly caught me
In my early sixties I damaged my shoulder snatching. Olympic lifting is unforgiving about position, and at that age you do not get away with what you got away with at thirty.
That injury is the reason I ever went looking. I exhausted the conventional options and ran out of road. But note the order of events: fifty years of work, then an injury, then the search. Not the search first.
If I had found all this at forty, with an intact shoulder and no patience, I am not confident I would have been careful. Most men are not. That is not a character flaw, it is just what wanting something does to your judgement.
How to tell which side of the gap you are on
I am not going to give you a protocol, because I do not write those. But there are questions worth answering honestly before you take anything.
- How many years have you actually trained? Not owned a membership. Trained, consistently, through the boring parts.
- What is your joint history? Anything that already twinges under load is telling you where the ceiling is.
- Can you hold position under a weight that is genuinely heavy for you? If your form breaks before your strength does, your structure is the limiting factor and more strength will find the weak point faster.
- Are you being monitored by an actual doctor? If not, the question of what to take does not arise yet.
None of that is exciting. It is also the part that decides whether you are still lifting in ten years.
What I would say to a man of forty
Do the work. Not as a moral position, and not because suffering is virtuous — I have no interest in either. Do it because the work is the thing that builds the structure everything else depends on, and there is no substitute for it that anyone has found.
Then, when the frame is there and you understand your own body, the science multiplies what you have built. That is the correct order. Reversed, it is the fastest way I know to be forty-five and unable to press overhead.
Repetition is the mother of learning, and the mother of evolution.
Now — this is controversial, I am sure it is. Everybody has their story and this is mine, from my own empirical evidence. But I have watched fifty years of men look for a way around the work, and I have not yet seen one find it.
Everybody has a choice. Make yours standing on something.
